Graffiti tagger sentenced to 8 years in prison

December 17, 2009 · 5 Comments

Courts in Corpus Christi, TX have sentenced a young man to 8 years in state prison without parole for $7500 in graffiti damages. It does make you wonder if it’s a privatized prison with kickbacks to district judges that he’s going to doesn’t it?

Police Stop NFL Player From Seeing Dying Mother-In-Law at Hospital

Police Stop NFL Player From Seeing Dying Mother-In-Law at Hospital.

This simply does not happen in other countries.  Why?  I still don’t know with certainty.  What I know is that you get a creepy feeling in the US of being in a de facto police state.

Maybe it has something to do with the widespread use of elections at all levels including very local levels.  This leads to populist policy.  More is better.  More cops.  More powers.  Power convictions.  Vote for Me.  Other Western countries don’t have elections for judges for example.

Keep in mind this only got out and reported on, because the driver was an NFL player.

What a riddle this country…

Editorial – The Torture Papers – NYTimes.com

The report said the interrogations generally followed guidelines approved by Mr. Bush’s Justice Department, which dedicated itself to finding ways to authorize abuse and evade legal accountability. But it offered a scathing condemnation of those guidelines, which it said diverged “sharply” from the practices of military and police interrogators, and the positions of pretty much everyone else, including the State Department, Congress, other Western governments and human rights groups.

Where the Birthers are – The Daily Dish | By Andrew Sullivan

August 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

And it has nothing to do with his race. Via Benen. What it also means – now that the GOP is an almost entirely Southern party – is that the Republicans cannot really take this on. 58 percent – a clear majority of Republican voters – either don’t believe or are unsure about whether Obama is legitimately the president of the United States.

———

RIP Republican Party. How fast is this crumbling for you guys? You went to bed with the nutbags and woke up in the internet age. Suddenly completely out of touch with the majority of Americans. Sarah Palin is the best known politician in your party, and Rush Limbaugh its most popular member. You wish you lived 50 years ago, and those are still the values you want to impose on the kids. Wake up. The internet is coming to your town. You will no longer be able to “shield” your kids from the world. They will know whatever they want to know and they will act however they want to act. That means the Republican party is left with southern racists heading towards their coffins (socialized healthcare pun intended).

You can still change your ways and focus on economics instead of social values… oh, except your previous 8 years left us in a recession. Not too good at that either huh?

Lets see if your corporate funders can bring you back from the dead. Like a giant zombie wrecking havoc against a people’s democracy.

Al Gore sued by over 30.000 Scientists for Global Warming fraud

Al Gore sued by over 30.000 Scientists for Global Warming fraud / John Coleman (via WakeUpCall4World)

There are many things wrong about what is going on in this segment of Red Eye, a show on Fox News, or as I like to call it Fox “News”.  Of course, my ears cringe when I hear Mr Coleman reduce the global warming position as the contention that the burning of fossil fuels “is going to turn the climate of earth into an oven and we’re all gonna bake and die” (just so we’re clear, thats a direct quote) followed by the argument that CO2 is a natural compound that we breath out all day long.

Again, here I must resist the temptation to criticize directly what Mr Coleman is saying and focus my attention on the question of why he is making these claims, and why Fox is providing him the platform on which to make them.  Check that, Fox is not just letting him express his view,  they are heavily sympathetic to it (most preciously, I’ve noted that the host refers to Vice President Gore simply as “Al”, what a douche).

so, why?

Can people really be so rotten?  I mean its easy to mock Mr Coleman for being so misguided.  Yet, we should not resort to rolling our eyes at the preposterous statements.  We must focus on the deliberate nature of what is going on here.

Whether Mr Coleman is delivering the message in good faith, can be doubted, but he must benefit from that doubt.  Maybe he’s just an old fart  with the mitigating circumstance that his understanding of mother earth’s delicate biosphere is based on his recollections of 1950s Earth science class through which he mostly slept.  What is NOT in doubt is that someone deliberately orchestrated all this movement (“there are 30.000 of us…”) and sought to find a spokesperson willing to bare the flag, no doubt with a fat consultancy contract attached with a bow.

I’m reading a book these days titled A Short History of Nearly Everything, by Bill Bryson.  He has a chapter on how lead came to become ubiquitous in many industrial processes because it was very profitable to produce industrially.   It was well-known that lead was a nasty neurotoxin early in the century, yet in the 1920s it was introduced into gasoline and later into canned food products.  Lead was not significantly removed from mass distribution products until the 70s.  And this was after every effort was made to misinform the public and discredit eminent scientist that tried to speak against the use of lead.   Today we all have over 625 times more lead in our blood then our great grandparents because of this lead rush.  And this is just one of innumerable examples of moneyed interests conspiring against the public.   (CFCs, tobacco, auto safety, etc.)

My point is: there is nothing new under the sun.  Mr Coleman represents a particular breed of villainy.

To end on a lighter note:  I love that the Red Eye host, Greg Gutfeld, introduced Coleman, the founder of the Weather Channel, by mentioning that its his favorite channel “cuz it has the hottest women there.” I guess they know their audience.

Nation For Marriage

May 12, 2009 · Leave a Comment

N.O.M. – Gathering Storm (via NationForMarriage)

There is homophobia and hatred everywhere, deplorably so.

What is remarkable is the means the bigots have here.  They can produce high quaity ads like this and air them.  Money can buy it after all.  Clearly there is not enough hurdles along the way.

Setting aside the bigotry and the merit of Nation For Marriage’s case, this is a political issue, it should be discussed and debated in a political forum with the appropriate format.

Advertising (propaganda) techniques should not be allowed to foment a mob mentality.  Otherwise, the arguments with most merit will not prevail, but rather those that are simplest to convey – Fear for example.

Democracy is not just ‘rule of the majority’. There is such a thing as the tyranny of the majority.

AT&T Fees

April 2, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Att small printPay attention when paying your AT&T bill.  Or more precisely, the one time when you set-up your credit card with AT&T Online.  They ask a reather technical question about whether you want to make payment through some particular payment networks, as opposed to VISA or MASTERCARD and without explaining what the significance of making one choice or the other.  They merely invite you to ask your bank.

So this blogger Barbara Weibel got to the bottom of it.

Its little dishonesties that are corroding this country.  How obscure and technical is this little rackette, how hard is it for a consumer to actually understand this scam and object to it?  Yet an other example of what happens when there is no institution to stand-in and ensure consumer protection and forbid these kinds of practices.  There is no utility, nothing created, no additional service.  Its just skimming off the top, screwing AT&T busy and unknowing customers.  Just moderately vile.

The Big Takeover : Rolling Stone

March 27, 2009 · Leave a Comment

The Big Takeover : Rolling Stone.

This editorial peice in Rollingstone Magazine really sets the bigger picture.  The bonuses are peanuts.  The aggregious inequity is not to be measured on a scale of millions, like the 164 distributed as bonuses by AIG.  Even the 700 billion Obama bail-out appearing as the bulk of the tax payer dish out, is in fact a small fraction of the economic benefits reaped by the Wall Street insiders.  These are just the smoke screen so that the media has something to clamour about.

What’s happening inside the Fed and Treasury behind closed doors, as Matt Taibbi argues, is a form of revolution, a sudden power grab.  He is correct in not seeing this as a matter of money, but rather as a matter of power shifting inequitably to an already priviledged part of the society.

To appreciate the saga that has unfolded over the past few months, one must apply oneself to assimiliate a massive body of details.  Matt Taibbi does a commendable job of presenting the stories that matter.  READ IT.

Clear Lanes Are No Longer Available

March 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Clear Lanes Are No Longer Available.

Clear lanes are easily identified by the illuminated blue Clear display cubes.

Here, Clear members present their Clear cards and boarding passes to one of our Clear attendants.

After inserting their cards into the Clear kiosk and verifying their biometric information, members are escorted to the front of the designated Clear lane.

Clear members must still pass through a metal detector and X-ray, but without having to face the long lines.

To help speed the process up even further, Clear attendants are available to help Clear members place personal items in the bins, and to help them gather their belongings after going through the checkpoint. This alone helps Clear members speed through security by as much as 30%.
